On April 3, Google’s artificial intelligence note-taking application NotebookLM introduced a remarkable new feature called “Discover sources”. This feature is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of students and researchers in gathering information.

Previously, when using NotebookLM, users had to manually add materials such as PDF files, Google Docs or slides, website links, YouTube video links, or pasted text before they could utilize the application’s functions like Audio Overviews and Mind Maps. However, this situation has now changed.

Perfect Island AI has noticed that Google announced this new feature through its official blog, The Keyword. With the support of Gemini technology, NotebookLM can automatically search for information on the web for users, thereby saving time and effort that would otherwise be spent on manual searches. Users simply need to open a new or existing notebook. In the materials panel, in addition to the traditional “Add materials” button, there is now a new “Discover materials” button.

After clicking this button, a text box with the prompt “What are you interested in?” will appear. Users just need to specifically describe what they are looking for in the text box and then click the submit button. NotebookLM will search hundreds of potential online resources within a few seconds, analyze them, and filter out the most relevant materials based on the user’s topic. Finally, it will compile a list of up to 10 recommended materials and attach a summary explaining their relevance. Users can check the materials they want to import into the notebook and then click the import button.

Moreover, users can still use these materials in NotebookLM as before, whether it’s to generate audio overviews, mind maps, frequently asked questions (FAQs), question and answer sessions (Q&As), quick summaries, or ask questions. For those who want to randomly learn new knowledge, NotebookLM also provides a “Curiosity Driven” (I’m feeling curious) button that can randomly generate materials for a topic.

Google mentioned in the blog that this is just the first of a series of features for NotebookLM to collect relevant information using Gemini. This new feature is being rolled out to all NotebookLM users starting from today and is expected to be fully launched within a week.

Although some people may worry that NotebookLM might produce information “hallucinations” (i.e., generating inaccurate or false information), so far, this problem has not appeared. In any case, the launch of this new feature is undoubtedly a major step forward for NotebookLM in improving user experience and functional practicality, and it also fills people with anticipation for its future development.
